christmas carol 2012

AT 7.30 PM

All        PROCESSIONAL HYMN                                                                   (stand)

            Once in Royal David’s City (1st verse choir only)

1.      Once in royal David’s city
Stood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a mother laid her baby
In a manger for his bed:
Mary was that Mother mild,
Jesus Christ her little Child.

1.      He came down to earth from heaven
Who is God and Lord of all,
And his shelter was a stable,
And his cradle was a stall:
With the poor and mean and lowly,
Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

2.    And through all his wondrous childhood
Day by day like us he grew,
He was little, weak and helpless,
Tears and smiles like us he knew:
And he feeleth for our sadness,
And he shareth in our gladness.

3.    And our eyes at last shall see him
Through his own redeeming love,
For that Child so dear and gentle,
Is our Lord in heaven above:
And he leads his children on
To the place where he is gone.

4.   Not in that poor lowly stable,
With the oxen standing by,
We shall see him: but in heaven,
Set at God’s right hand on high,
Where like stars his children crowned,
All in white shall wait around.

WELCOME                                                                                                               (sit)

              The Reverend Stephen Miller, Senior Chaplain
The Mission to Seafarers
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those that trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever and ever.   Amen.

All        HYMN                                                                             (stand)
          In the bleak mid-winter

1.      In the bleak mid-winter

Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone
Snow had fallen,
snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter,
Long ago.

2.    Our God, heaven cannot hold him

Nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away
When he comes to reign
In the bleak mid-winter
A stable place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty,
Jesus Christ.

3.    Enough for him, whom Cherubim

Worship night and day,
A breastful of milk,
And a mangerful of hay
Enough for him, whom an angels
Fall down before,
The ox and ass and camel
Which adore.

4.   Angels and archangels

May have gathered there,
Cherubim and Seraphim
Thronged the air
But only his mother
In her maiden bliss
Worshipped the Beloved
With a kiss.

5.    What can I give him,

Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb;
If I were a wise man
I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give him
Give my heart.

           While Shepherds watched their Flocks by night

1.      While shepherds watched their flocks by night,
All seated on the ground,
The angel of the Lord came down,
And glory shone around.

2.    ‘Fear not,’ said he (for mighty dread
Had seized their troubled mind);
Glad tidings of great joy I bring
To you and all mankind.

3.    To you in David’s town this day
Is born of David’s line
A Saviour, who is Christ the Lord;
And this shall be the sign:

4.   The heavenly Babe you there shall find
To human view displayed,
All meanly wrapped in swathing bands,
And in a manger laid.’

5.    Thus spake the seraph; and forthwith
Appeared a shining throng
Of angels praising God, who thus
Addressed their joyful song:

6.    ‘All glory be to God on high,
And on the earth be peace;
Good-will henceforth from heaven to men
Begin and never cease.’

          The Angel Gabriel

1.      The Angel Gabriel from heaven came,
his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame;
‘All hail,’ said he, ‘thou lowly maiden Mary,
most highly favoured lady.’

2.    ‘For known a blessèd Mother thou shalt be,
all generations laud and honour thee,
thy son shall be Emmanuel by seers foretold;
most highly favoured lady.’

3.    Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head,
‘To me be as it pleaseth God,’ she said.
‘My soul shall laud and magnify his holy name’:
most highly favoured lady.

4.   Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ was born
in Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn,
and Christian folk throughout the world will ever say,
‘Most highly favoured lady.’

CHOIR                          聖誕歌  Stars of Ice (in Chinese)            Adult Choir

1.     一輪明月,數點寒星,
2.     歌聲完畢,奇光漸斂,

3.     旅店數椽,兀立古城;

1.  Stars of ice, wheel of moon-light bright,
Shine on sheep with silvery light;
Humble shepherd chatting circled round,
Sit content on grassy height;
Sudden light! Hark, the angels sing!
Shepherds crouch in awe.
Mid the clouds the angels proclaim:
God’s Son is born in Bethlehem.

2.  Dies the song, star and moon gently fade,
Shepherds leap for very joy;
Leave their quiet flocks homeward quickly fly,
Worship then the Holy Boy.
Wondrous news thro’ the streets resounds,
Glad praises fill every home.
Poor man’s Saviour, peasant’s Friend,
Comes today to Bethlehem.

3.  Leaned men from far eastern lands
Kneel before the Holy Child,
Bring abundant gifts rare, luxuriant,
Crowd the age-worn village inn.
Miles on miles had they come to adore
No distance seemed too far.
Boundless, saving, peaceful Love,
Now has come to Bethlehem. (Amen.)

          Silent Night

1.      Silent night! Holy night!
Heaven is near, earth is bright,
Angel songs are heard above
As the Child of peace and love
Sleeps in Mary’s arms,
Sleeps in Mary’s arms.

2.    Silent night! Holy night!
Skies are clear, stars are bright,
Now the shepherds wend their way,
Homage to this Child to pay:
He is Christ the Lord,
He is Christ the Lord.

3.    Silent night! Holy night!
Christ is here, all is light,
Shadows of the past are gone
With the advent of the Son,
Born to save us all,
Born to save us all.

            O come, all ye faithful                                              (stand)

1.      O come, all ye faithful,
Joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
Come and behold him
Born the King of Angels:
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

2.    God of God,
Light to Light,
Lo! he abhors not the Virgin’s womb;
Very God,
Begotten, not created:
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

3.    See how the Shepherds,
Summoned to his cradle,
Leaving their flocks, draw nigh with lowly fear;
We too will thither
Bend our joyful footsteps:
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

4.   Lo! star-led chieftains,
Magi, Christ adoring,
Offer him incense, gold, and myrrh;
We to the Christ Child
Bring our heart’s oblations:
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

5.    Child, for us sinners
Poor and in the manger,
Fain we embrace thee, with awe and love;
Who would not love thee,
Loving us so dearly?
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

6.    Sing, choirs of Angels,
Sing in exultation,
Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above;
Glory to God
In the Highest:
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

All        RECESSIONAL HYMN

            Hark, the herald angels sing                                     (stand)

1.      Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King;
Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled:
Joyful all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies,
With the angelic host proclaim,
Christ is born in Bethlehem:
Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.

2.    Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
Late in time behold him come
Offspring of a Virgin’s womb!
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see,
Hail the incarnate Deity!
Pleased as man with man to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel:
Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.

3.    Hail the heaven-born Prince of peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings;
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth:
Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the new-born King.

We are most grateful to all Saints’ Cathedral Choir for leading the singing in our worship.  Our thanks too to those who read the lessons.
